Let's Paint a Pumpkin Together

Welcome.  I am so happy that you stopped by.  My garden gate is always open for you to come in and sit and relax with a cup of tea while I share with you the inspiration for my art.  This time of year we paint a simple scarecrow together that  can hang on your door, garden gate, etc.  I received a number of e-mails this year asking if we could paint something even simpler that you can  paint with your children, grandchildren, etc.  The simplest thing I can think of  for us to paint is a pumpkin.

Let's join Bentley, my Studio Assistant, in the garden to look for pumpkin inspirations for us to paint.

You may recall this is the scarecrow we painted last year - there are simple instructions on how to paint her under ART 101 on my blog.

As you can see - pumpkins come in all shape and sizes.  The pumpkin sign on the bicycle below is a good example of how you can paint your pumpkin.

Simply draw half a circle on each side - then another half circle next to the first one and then in the center of your pumpkin. Don't worry if your lines are not quite straight as you can fix them when you start filling in with colors.   I base coated my canvas with green - you can use any color you want as your background.  You will need orange, white, brown (I use Burnt Senna) and green.  

I outlined the pumpkin with Burnt Sienna and started filling in the orange and blending it with the Burnt Sienna.

After you fill in the orange - mix a little white with the orange and add some highlights - next use your brown and add some shadows under the pumpkin and draw a darker line under the pumpkin to anchor it.

Finish by adding a few curly cues to the stem and adding a few leaves in each corner to complete your pumpkin.

The small canvas can be added to Autumn decorations to create a charming vignette, placed on a book shelf or used in many ways and can be packed away for next year with your seasonal decorations.
